Why do we despair?
Despair over living, despair over losing —

Human mind incessantly clings to something, and is obsessed with it.
People who are obsessed with the relationship with their lovers and feel they can’t live without it, they despair when the relationship ends.
Misery toward a life arises from there and they put themselves in a hole.

This can be applied to various fields.
Those who are devoted only to work and risk their lives to their work or business
despair when the work or business fail or end completely.
Some people kill themselves because their companies go bankrupt or they are unsuccessful in their work.

Those who gained their reputation and became popular for something in the world
and maintain themselves by clinging to the reputation and status
would inevitably despair when they have lost the reputation and the status at once.

This can be said to the field of spirituality,
and some people become mentally unstable and despair
when their spiritual self-realization becomes impossible or lose the God that supported them.

Whatever it is, despair can be said to
“arises when people lose things they cling to”.
They maintain themselves because they have something to cling to,
so when they lose the object and themselves, their mentalities collapse at once.
The flow of misery, despair and, at worst, suicide happens.

Don’t cling to anything.
Don’t make any objects that maintain yourself and don’t depend on them.
Whether it is a lover, job, honor, money, God or spirituality,
don’t cling to anything.

To live without obsession like this means to live in the abandonment of self.
From the self-renunciation, the free spirit without any despair blooms.
Live in the abandonment of self — this is not negative.
Rather, as long as you cling to yourself, you can never be free from misery and despair.
