“Many people are always self-conscious
and obsessed with baseless worries.
They are slaves and prisoners of others’ reputation or estimation.
People, who keep on being tied to ‘public estimation’, don’t have divinity inside.
There is no sign of divinity growing inside of them.”
We worry about ‘our reputation’.
We can’t help but be conscious of social eye or public eye.
And we always compare ourselves with others.
Public estimation, our reputation —
Are people, who are continuously tied to such things
and live everyday with worry and fear, spiritually free at all?
Or are they tied spiritually?
Are they really free?
People who are conscious of their reputation, people who keep on acting to enhance their reputation
are obsessed with themselves after all, and that obsession is exactly human ego.
In such a life of self obsession, there is no freedom.
Where there is self-obsession, there is no beauty, but only ugliness and immaturity of mind.
Therefore, Thoreau says,
“People, who keep on being tied to ‘public estimation’, don’t have divinity inside.
There is no sign of divinity growing inside of them.”
As long as there is human ugliness called self-obsession, there is no divinity.
Because divinity is good, beauty, wisdom,
and blessing like a flower that has renounced itself entirely.
Ugliness of self-obsession and beauty of self-renunciation — these two are at the opposite extreme of each other.
